Earlier this month, singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson shocked her fans when she filed for divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock, who she was married to for nearly seven years. Now, Clarkson is opening up about how “overwhelming” motherhood can be, adding that while there is “no greater gift” than having a child, it comes with many challenges.
“You are going to be inspired to do all of these magical things with your kids. Do things you’ve never done before. Try things you’ve never done before,” Clarkson advised, according to People magazine. “It is such an awesome experience being a parent. I know it can be overwhelming, but it is so amazing. You aren’t just molding their little lives — it’s changing you in the process, too.”
The 38 year-old singer went on to urge her fellow moms to “nap when [their kids]” nap, even though it might be tempting to do other things they can’t do when their little ones are awake.
“We all think, ‘No, this is the only time I have something for me.’ Don’t do it! Take the nap, trust me,” added Clarkson, who is mother to 6 year-old daughter River and 4 year-old son Remy.
She also urged moms everywhere to “let yourself off the hook,” whether they are stay at home or working mothers.
“You are still getting it done, you are still productive. It’s just working through time management as a new mom,” Clarkson said. “You’ve got to look at the humor in everything, and in yourself. There are moments when you will want to cry so hard — and that’s okay! — but just try to laugh and let it go.”
One thing that Clarkson believes is crucial is one-on-one story time between moms and their kids.
“It’s so important to read to your kiddos,” she said. “My mama was a teacher, and she really instilled it in me the importance of reading at an early age. As much as you can, read to them.”
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock earlier this month after realizing in quarantine that their marriage was over. Now back in Los Angeles after quarantining in Montana for months, her children are her top priority at the moment.
“Her priority is making sure her children grow up in a stable, loving environment,” a source said.
