On Wednesday, Maryland’s State Superintendent Of Schools Karen Salmon made the announcement that public school students will not return to classrooms for the rest of the academic year. My family had been wondering about the school year since Governor Larry Hogan was opening up golf courses and parks on Thursday.
This decision made Maryland one of the last states in the country to make this call during the coronavirus pandemic. Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, and Washington DC. made their decision to close all of their schools in the month of April.

[Baltimore Sun] Online and distance learning will continue while the State Department of Education readies a comprehensive long-term recovery plan called “Maryland Together: Recovery Plan for Education,” said Karen Salmon, the state superintendent of schools.
“I am convinced this is the appropriate decision in order to continue to protect the health and safety of our students, educators, staff and all members of school communities throughout Maryland,” Salmon said at a news conference Wednesday.
Salmon emphasized that the school recovery plan was not prescriptive and does not make any mandates that school systems must follow. Rather, the plan outlines a set of “options and considerations developed from best practices and available research across the country,” she said.
School systems could opt to reopen on a staggered schedule, to small groups or on a case-by-case basis depending on a student’s needs. A full return of the study body to in-person instruction would likely come during the third stage of the governor’s plan, Salmon said.
