Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has just released a new PSA in which he begged the American people to come together and not treat the coronavirus pandemic as a partisan issue.

The one-minute PSA shows scenes around the United States in an attempt to remind viewers that we are all in this together. It ends with a shot of masked essential workers along with the caption, “This is not about politics. It’s about us.”

In an interview with CNN that coincided with the release of the PSA, McConaughey explained what inspired him to send a message to his fellow Americans.

“Just recently, I started to notice kind of a partisan political divide in the country, and I wanted to remind everyone with this latest PSA, hey, it’s about us, as in USA. We have to stay together. This is a human thing, don’t be divided. We don’t need two wars, we have one, against the virus,” he said.

McConaughey went on to add that practices like wearing masks should not be politicized right now.

“Science is behind us right now, and the mask is about letting science catch up,” he said. “We’ve got to buy time. A mask is a very good tool for that, and I have not heard any science that says it’s not.”

“I felt that myself, my family, and the country needed a motivational reminder that America is much stronger together rather than divided by partisan politics,” McConaughey added in a statement. “The war with this disease is not a political one, it’s a human one. The virus doesn’t differentiate between political parties, between Us and Them, it is a threat to people from every segment of our population. During this time of chaos and uncertainty, we all need to be driven by a purpose that unites us, not a politics that divide us.”

Roy Spence, the co-creator of the PSA, agreed that there needs to be an end to “partisan politics,” adding that “America cannot fight and win the war against COVID-19 if we as Americans are fighting against ourselves politically.”
