President Trump sat down at the Lincoln Memorial for a virtual town hall with Fox News Sunday night, and the question inevitably arose of his constant duels with the far-left press.

The president justifiably said, “I am greeted with a hostile press the likes of which no president has ever seen… The closest will be that gentleman up there. They say nobody got treated worse than Lincoln… I believe I am treated worse. You see those press conferences. They come at me with questions that are disgraceful…their manner of presentation and their words. I feel if I was kind to them, I would be walked off the stage.”

The president is correct on both counts. Though Abraham Lincoln was called “an ape,” “a baboon” (apparently simian references were popular with the day’s media) and worse, the level of hatred and bile directed at Donald Trump surpasses even that.

Trump explained further, “They come at you with the most horrible horrendous biased questions. You see it. 94 to 95 percent of the press is hostile, and yet…we have tremendous support…but the media might as well be in the Democrat party.”

The reason the press hates this president, and the reason he bests them in polls and in debate, is that Trump has committed the ultimate DC media sin: He fights back.

He refuses to accept the press and leftist premise that all conservatives and Republicans are greedy sexist despoilers of the land and far-right racist wingnuts. He challenges the basis of their arguments, and when he shows that basis to be empty he makes them look bad in front of a national audience.

The vicious hatred comes from the fact that the fragile egos of most of the White House press corps can’t stand the public embarrassment and exposure of their nonsensical arguments. So their questions get biased and emotional, as their liberal ire comes to the forefront, which plays right into Trump’s hands.
