The July 14th GOP U.S. Senate primary in Alabama that features a hard and dirty race between former U.S. senator and Trump Attorney General Jeff Sessions versus former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville has a third contender: President Trump.

Trump, still livid about Sessions recusing himself as AG during the Democrat witch hunts, has come out strongly for Tuberville. That has made Sessions move to try and close his pro-Trump voter flank against the popular football coach. But for Sessions it may be too little too late, as Trump is wildly popular in Alabama.

“I was the first to endorse President Trump, even when many thought I was nuts to do so,” Sessions said, making a plea to Trump voters. “I helped Trump win and traveled the country with him, embedded in his campaign. I am one of the architects of his agenda, and I was pushing his agenda even before he ran for office.” The “nuts” line was not smart. It’s ego when Sessions needs contrition.

The former Senator continues: “I have remained faithful to the President and his agenda. I have always stood up for him, and I never backed down, not even for one moment. My convictions are immovable, built on rock, not sand.” Well, not quite a rock when it came to fighting Democrats on witch hunts. Tuberville won’t let Sessions get away with it and is on the attack.

“President Trump just EXPOSED Jeff Sessions for what he is: someone who tucked his tail and ran,” Tuberville tweeted, sharing a “Fox & Friends” clip.

The president has not been silent, not by a long shot, “Jeff Sessions was a disaster,” Trump said on a Friday call to “Fox & Friends,” adding, “I didn’t want to make him attorney general but he was the first senator to endorse me so I felt a little bit of an obligation. He came to see me four times just begging me to be attorney general. He wasn’t, to me, equipped to be attorney general but he just wanted it, wanted it, wanted it. He goes in, he was so bad in his nomination proceedings I should have gotten rid of him there. But every time the word Russia, he knew less about Russia than I did, he knew nothing about Russia… Jeff was just very weak and very sad and when the name Russia was mentioned, just the word Russia, he immediately instead of being a man and saying ‘this is a hoax,’ he recused himself.”

“@jeffsessions has gone too far this time!” Tuberville then tweeted in a strike at Sessions. “He has called President Trump a liar in his latest statement. It’s time we fire him once and for all! Help me send him a message today that we do not want a weak-kneed swamp rat representing Alabama.” You gotta love “weak-kneed swamp rat.” Sessions tried to hit him back. But this kind of patronizing response message won’t work in Alabama.

“Mr. Tuberville is an opportunist who isn’t from here,” Sessions retorted again. “He stopped here for work for a while, and moved on, eventually retiring in Florida. He doesn’t know the first thing about Alabama.”

So Sessions basically reverted to post civil war rhetoric, calling Tuberville a carpetbagger. Okay, that might work in ‘Bama. However, one good hit won’t win the day against a popular football coach endorsed by an even more popular president. Odds are in favor of Tuberville.
