Tupac Shakur is alive and well and living in Kentucky and currently needs unemployment benefits to pay his bills.
On Monday night, Gov. Andy Beshear brought up Shakur’s name explaining how the state was trying to process March’s filed unemployment claims amid the coronavirus pandemic by the end of April, the AP reports.

But here’s where things went wrong. According to the Governor, a few “bad apples,” including a person who filed an unemployment claim under the name of rapper Tupac Shakur are responsible for slowing down the state’s unemployment processing. Shakur was killed in a 1996 shooting.
Beshear blamed people who “think they’re funny” for making “thousands of other people wait” for their unemployment payments. Little did he know that he was wrong 100%. The local newspaper, Lexington Herald-Leader, reported that Tupac Malik Shakur, 46, who goes by Malik, lives in Lexington.
Before stay-at-home restrictions were placed on the state and shut down some restaurants, Malik worked as a cook. He filed for unemployment March 13 and has been waiting to receive his first check. “I’ve been struggling for like the last month trying to figure out how to pay the bills,” Shakur said.
He never thought his unemployment benefits were being held up because the state thought he was pulling a prank. Along with being confused as to why he hadn’t received his unemployment, he told the newspaper, “I’m really hurt, I’m embarrassed, and I’m shocked.”

The Governor’s office initially said the state was not able to verify the identity on the application. Still, working in tandem with the newspaper, they expect the situation to be resolved.
Beshear was reported to have called Shakur personally on Tuesday to apologize. Shakur said he appreciated the gesture and forgave Beshear. “I understand, he’s dealing with a lot,” Shakur said. “Mistakes happen.”
