All Verizon customers that are on a metered plan will be receiving 15gb of extra data this month. Customers will also see a reduction in overage charges and late fees along with free international calling for those who are on consumer wireless and home voice plans.

This is to help those affected by the global pandemic of the novel coronavirus in an effort to keep everyone connected via high-speed internet.

It is important to note that free international calling will only apply to CDC level 3 countries. The Verge reports that all of this is a part of the 60 days Keep Americans Connected pledge.

“We understand the hardships that many of our customers are facing, and we’re doing our part to ensure they have broadband internet connectivity during this unprecedented time,” said Verizon Consumer Group CEO Ronan Dunne. “With so many Americans working and learning remotely from home, having access to reliable and affordable internet is more important than ever before.”

“The pledge asks US internet service providers to not terminate service for residential and small business customers, waive late fees incurred as a result of the pandemic, and provide open access public Wi-Fi hotspots to “any American who needs them.” It also urges companies to suspend data caps and fees for long-distance calls.” [The Verge]

Other internet services providing companies have been taking a similar step to fulfill their part in meeting the standards of this pledge. T-Mobile has what may be the most generous offering at this time and will be removing data caps and also giving customers 20GB of data.

Comcast will only be eliminating data caps, unlike AT&T, who will only be waiving fees for overage charges for domestic wireless plans. Those who are on Verizon’s unlimited plan will be receiving 15GB of 4G LTE data for their personal hotspot.

Due to the significant number of people who have been temporarily laid off and will continue to get laid off, this is a necessary effort for those who won’t be able to cover their usual data expenses for the next two months or so. At the same time, there are going to be plenty of people who won’t find this effort too useful.

Right now, over 75 million Americans are on a “Stay At Home” lockdown, and the rest are pretty much on their way to the same thing. This means that for many, a majority of data usage will be made available through Wi-Fi. Now I’m not going to assume that everyone has access to Wi-Fi in their homes, but I can comfortably say that a majority do.

This pledge will help those who still have to be out and about during these uncertain times.
