Pres. Trump gave staggering predictions of death rates at the hand of COVID-19 (coronavirus) during his Tuesday press conference, which was coupled along with a warning of ‘Hard Days” ahead.

What some fail to realize numbers are based on predictions, based on New York and New Jersey thus far, but may not correctly predict the nation. It depends on how each state and city follows guidelines. But we shall see?

I think these numbers should be considered reasonable. But we still have people attending church services illegally open bars etc. I would not be shocked to see at least 1,000,000 deaths, at least. Walking outside, hanging out on the deck with your household is one thing but hundreds being bused into churches across the country. That is not social distancing, in case someone is wondering.

Imagine the folks during the 1918 Spanish epidemic not having social media. From January of 1918 until December 1920, it infected 500 million people, about a quarter of the world’s population at the time. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.

Public health officials stressed that the number could be less if people across the country bear down on keeping their distance from one another.

“We really believe we can do a lot better than that,” said Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force. That would require all Americans to take seriously their role in preventing the spread of disease, she said.

Added Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, “This is a number that we need to anticipate, but we don’t necessarily have to accept it as being inevitable.”

Trump called it “a matter of life and death” for Americans to heed his administration’s guidelines and predicted the country would soon see a “light at the end of the tunnel” in a pandemic that has killed more than 3,500 Americans and infected 170,000 more.

“I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead,” Trump said.

“This is going to be one of the roughest two or three weeks we’ve ever had in our country,” Trump added. “We’re going to lose thousands of people.” [Associated Press]

We are practicing social distancing here in Maryland, and I think we are doing an excellent job after Governor Larry Hogan forced the stay-at-home policy. I am somewhat concerned about the other parts of the country.

A friend of mine called me from Alabama on Sunday and said it was business as usual restaurants open, social gathering, etc., the whole country needs to be on board, or this will not work.

Deaths this week were from infections two weeks ago. Deaths next week are from last week’s infections. Each week’s death toll is a report card grading how well people protected themselves and others two weeks before.

Maybe a lockdown could have been avoided if China didn’t repeatedly lie to the world and its people. Perhaps a lockdown could have been avoided if they didn’t silence the doctor that discovered the virus and wrote about it before he was “convinced” and “discovered” that everything he knew about the virus was, in fact, wrong.

Nobody will ever convince me that lockdown hasn’t bought the needed time. You can spout all you want about “should have had 500 million tests ready the day after the virus was discovered” if that makes you feel smart. The fact is that it takes time to do ANYTHING by the millions.
