Dr. Lorna Breen, 49, was a New York City emergency room doctor who was on the “front lines” of the fight against the coronavirus has died by suicide.
She worked at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital and had traveled to Virginia this past weekend when she took her life on Sunday, according to Tyler Hawn, a spokesman for the Charlottesville Police Department.
The father said his 49-year-old daughter, who died Sunday, had no history of mental illness. But he said that the last time they spoke, she told him how excruciating it was to have to continually watch contagion patients die, including some even before they could be taken from the ambulance.
“She was truly in the trenches on the front line,” Philip Breen told the Times.
“Make sure she’s praised as a hero,” he added. “She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died.”
Breen had allegedly come down with the virus and tried to go back to work after recovering. They sent her home, where she went to Virginia to stay with her family. According to a colleague, Breen had worked to get protective equipment for her staff members, then checked on them by text while she was recuperating.
