As a veteran, I am heartbroken to hear this news. These beautiful Americans, patriots, fought to keep this country safe, and in turn, the state couldn’t protect them with safety procedures?
What a horrific failure. If ever there were a time to send the National Guard, it would have been. Right before they forced everyone together to die or when they realized they were understaffed. Heart-wrenching.

Heads should roll from the Director of this home up to the Governor! Manslaughter charges should be filed up and down this chain! I don’t think that anyone disagrees that this Director was unqualified for this job.
He is former military with a background in procurement and inventory control but no experience in formal medical/geriatric training. His staff blew the whistle on him after 11 Vets were dead, but he never reported the deaths to the state as he was required to do. Other nursing homes out here are doing fine and just shake their heads about this terrible travesty of politics.

The coronavirus has killed at least 80 veterans at an elder care facility in Massachusetts, in what’s being described as the deadliest known outbreak at a long-term care facility in the U.S.
An additional 82 veterans and 81 employees have tested positive for the virus at Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, and federal officials are trying to determine whether residents were denied proper medical care as deaths continue to climb.
“It’s horrific,” said Edward Lapointe, whose father-in-law lives at the home and had a mild case of the virus. “These guys never had a chance.
The outbreak has now claimed the lives of nearly one-third of all residents at the veterans’ home, with a new fatality being reported almost every day.
It’s not clear to me whether or not this is a federally funded or VA Administration managed facility. What is clear to me is that we owe our veterans better than this. They risked their lives for our freedom once already. We should keep them safe from harm when they reach their most vulnerable stage in life.
We must, with laser-like focus, direct our attention towards the protection of high-risk populations such as nursing homes patients and those with high-risk comorbidities.
We can do this more effectively by opening up society to those who are at low risk and focus testing on those entering and leaving facilities with high risk / older populations. We do not need to lock down schools, restaurants, etc.

With our limited resources and the fact that anyone can get Covid at any time and be asymptomatic, we must protect high risk from the healthy carriers by rapid testing those of us who come into contact with them. We do not and will not have the resources to test everyone every day.
We do now have the resources to primarily protect the elderly/high-risk population by examining those who work with and care for them daily
