Democrat Kweisi Mfume 71, who was the head of the NAACP for nearly nine years, defeated Republican Kimberly Klacik in a special election held Tuesday. Mfume had earlier beat out Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Elijah Cummings’ widow for the Democrat nomination, which was a feat in itself.

It’s almost like the district was saying we want a change from a Cummings name but not political party change. Klacik, like many Black Republicans, primarily appeared on Fox News, not a huge television audience for black voters, and that could have been her downfall. John James, out of Michigan, did the same thing in 2016, appearing mostly on Fox News instead of spreading his name and face around the local establishments.

Here’s a bit of news. Cummings replaced Mfume, who left the House of Representatives in 1996 to head the NAACP. Mfume served five terms as a Representative.

Mfume ran on a platform of stronger gun-safety measures and health care, among other issues, while Klacik campaigned on economic development through a government program known as opportunity zones.

Klacik, a Baltimore County Republican Central Committee member, generated buzz with appearances on Fox News.

Her social media posts last year showing trash and blight in Baltimore prompted a call for her to appear on the network’s program “Fox & Friends.” President Donald Trump went on to describe the 7th Congressional District in tweets last year as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live,” at a time when Cummings was the powerful House Oversight Committee chairman, leading multiple investigations of the president at the time.

Klacik, 38, campaigned on economic development. She wants to help struggling parts of Baltimore through a federal program known as opportunity zones. Supported by Trump, the program focuses on increasing private investment in distressed communities with tax incentives for people who invest in real estate projects and operate businesses in designated low-income communities.

“To me, the only way you’re going to lift people out of poverty is with employment, and I think that’s what really made me want to run for the seat, because I could see the need for career opportunities, not just jobs but actual careers,” Klacik said in a recent interview.
