Former First Lady Michelle Obama made a rare political statement on Tuesday when she took to Twitter to chastise Wisconsin for holding their primary vote, saying that the United States needs to “do better to ensure voting is safe for all voters.”

“Today, Wisconsin voters had to choose between making their voice heard and keeping themselves and their family safe,” Michelle tweeted. “No American should ever have to make that choice. We must do better to ensure voting is safe for all voters. The latest Wisconsin voting information is below.”

Michelle posted this alongside a link giving more information on how voters in Wisconsin can ensure that their absentee mail-in ballots will be counted.

MSN reported that Wisconsin decided to move forward with their state primary vote yesterday despite warnings from health officials that people should continue to self-isolate at home due to the coronavirus. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers had issued an executive order to postpone the election, but the state’s Supreme Court overturned the order on Monday.

Later on Monday night, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Wisconsin could discount any mail-in votes postmarked after Tuesday’s election. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg spoke out afterwards to say that this decision “will result in massive disenfranchisement.”

Michelle’s tweet came as a surprise to some given the fact that she has always been reluctant to involve herself in politics. She has resisted all calls to run for president this year despite leftists begging her to throw her hat in the race for months, with the former First Lady often saying that politics doesn’t interest her.

“Just between us, and the readers of this magazine — there’s zero chance,” Michelle told The National about the chances that she’d run. “There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world, and I keep doing plenty of them, from working with young people to helping families lead healthier lives. But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It’s just not for me.”

It has been speculated that former Vice President Joe Biden could name Michelle as his running mate, as it is something that he has said he is open to himself.
