On Friday, Cecil “Mac” Hargrove, 84, died of COVID-19 (coronavirus) adverse conditions in which he had been admitted to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for just 17 hours earlier due to difficulty with breathing.
His son, Blake thinks his father picked up the virus on a March 14 flight from Spain to New York. At that time, John F. Kennedy Airport officials informed his mother and father to self-quarantine. They had spent the time visiting their son who was a Fulbright scholar.
According to the NY Post, Cecil’s wife of 63 several years, Katherine, was given time to spend with him before his death. She said, “If we could not have an extremely realistic probability of returning to our former capabilities, we did not want to reside. When I got to the hospital and noticed my spouse, I realized we had manufactured the ideal choice.”
A doctor later told Blake Hargrove as he waited outside the hospital in Hershey that his father — who had previously been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — had viral pneumonia. The results of Cecil Hargrove’s COVID-19 test results weren’t ready yet, but he needed to be put on a ventilator, a doctor said.
However, Blake Hargrove shot down that plan, insisting his father would not want to be kept alive on a ventilator if he had contracted the coronavirus, potentially putting him at risk of being unable to speak to relatives before dying.
He said he then confirmed those wishes with his father by phone before a test confirmed the 84-year-old had COVID-19, PennLive.com reports.
