On Saturday, New York City joined Virginia, Kansas, and Pennsylvania, as school systems that have shut down for the rest of the year.

While this is mildly encouraging, the fact that it was done only due to shutting everything down and destroying the economy does not exactly make is a success story.

How do we open back up? Get people back to work, to school, to travel, to church, to malls, to normal grocery store visits, to get their haircut, to the (regular doctor), the dentist, the eye doctor, the restaurants, hotels, sporting events … you get the idea. The current status is misery. We might be (probably are) doing the right thing. But it is misery and unsustainable.

New York City’s 1.1 million-pupil public school system will be closed for the rest of the school year as the city struggles to contain the coronavirus outbreak, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Saturday.

Public schools in New York City, the U.S. epicenter of the virus outbreak, have been closed since March 16. A massive effort to move instruction online has met with mixed success in the city, where many low-income students lack Wi-Fi and devices for connecting to their virtual classrooms.

De Blasio resisted closing schools even as the city recorded its first deaths from the coronavirus, saying he feared that health care workers would have to stay home to care for children and that hundreds of thousands of poor students would go hungry without their free school meals.

Authorities in some other locales, including the states of Virginia and Pennsylvania, have previously announced that schools will be shuttered for the rest of the year. [Daily Mail]

When you “flatten” the curve, the trade-off is that you then elongate it accordingly. The total area under the curve remains the same. Nothing “goes away” by flattening the curve – it’s just re-distributed over a more extended period. Which is fine, but something to understand.

A Brooklyn principal died due to COVID-19

What people should be told is getting through this is more like running a marathon, not a sprint to the finish line. I think when you put it in simple terms like that, you help everyone understand.

As of now, there’s no magic pill out there to cure you of this virus. What may help some people will kill others. Politics will do absolutely nothing for you; this is a medical issue.
