On Tuesday afternoon Acting U.S. Navy Secretary Thomas Modly submitted a letter of resignation to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. No word on whether President Trump or the secretary of defense will accept his resignation.

Modly recently fired U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt Captain Brett Crozier after Crozier leaked a letter to the press bemoaning the Navy’s efforts to fight the coronavirus outbreak on the ship. He was rightly fired for panicking, bypassing the chain of command, and for, through the media, giving potential adversaries knowledge about the condition of his ship. His crew stuck by him throughout the ordeal.

All would have been business as usual if Modly hadn’t then idiotically addressed the crew and called their hero Crozier “naive” and “stupid.”

The president said Monday at his daily press briefing that he would like to work out the situation between the captain and the Navy. Today’s development could shake up that scenario.

The Democrats, always looking for an excuse to get a Trump team scalp on their belt, then pounced. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats called for Modly’s head on a pike. On Tuesday, they may have gotten it.
