This is a great topic, and I am glad to watch black Americans talk about it instead of individuals pushing talking points for political reasons.

I learned (coming from a household that I thought was middle class but teetering on poor at various times) that it’s only up to you and God how far you go in life. Once I internalized that, all victim energy dissolved from my Being. I rise despite the resistance.

As for “playing the victim card,” means people blame someone else for their troubles. Most of the time, people are at least partly responsible for the troubles they encounter. If someone is playing the victim, he is ignoring his part in the situation, no matter how small.

It’s embarrassing when the grandparents of people who went through racism and systemic oppression, have to watch the freest black people in their generation talk about systemic oppression in today’s day and age.

I just really enjoyed how everyone listened to and respected each other. We need more of this in America today.

I don’t think we ”play the victim” because, as a race, we’ve been victims; however, I do think too many of us have a victim’s mentality. Too many black Americans hold another political party accountable for the success they have not achieved. When in actuality, we can and have still succeeded. Yes, it will be harder, longer, and may even have a cap, however, what other choice do we have?

This is an excellent conversation. Accusing someone of “playing the race card” does seem to negate the documented systemic racism experienced by Black Americans in this country and ignores how other groups were able to build generational wealth that has been passed on and benefits their descendants even to this day.

Yet, recognizing that these systems did, AND STILL DO exists, does not let black people off the hook for trying to reform the system, address systemic barriers, get educated about money, and go on to create opportunities to build wealth in our own homes and communities. No one is going to do it for us. We have to deliver ourselves.

If person contemplates playing the victim, they are searching for excuses to fail, searching for excuses to not put forth an effort, searching for ways to exclude themselves from any responsibility or accountability for their position in life. I love this panel, they need to speak on other topics together. Everyone was open to listening to other opinions even if they didn’t agree with it.
