Serbia Declares State Of Emergency, Closes Borders

Serbia has declared a state of emergency in an attempt to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country.

As of today, March 16, the borders are closed to all foreigners not living in Serbia. Serbian who enter the country are obliged to stay in quarantine for 14 days or face criminal charges of up to three years in prison.

The government has shut down all education institutions, and deployed the military to guard hospitals. Police are monitoring people is self-isolation.

Yesterday, Vucic criticized the European Union for not providing support, and praised China for helping Serbia to fight the spread of coronavirus. He added that Serbian borders will be open for Chinese nationals.

The government has advised businesses to organize their work so that employees can work from home when possible.

It is recommended that citizens stay isolated, except when they need to go to shops and pharmacies or throw trash. Old people are strongly advised not to go out at all.

Public transportation has been cancelled during the night and reduced in daytime.

Serbia has registered 55 cases of people infected with coronavirus and zero fatalities. Four patients are hospitalized but show no serious complications.
