Here’s something Mayor Bill DeBlasio doesn’t want you to know. New York City’s homeless shelters have become a “breeding ground” for the coronavirus, and he’s not rushing to fix it.

Who’s saying this? Gregory Floyd, president of Teamsters Local 237, told The Post, “I believe the shelters have become breeding grounds for the coronavirus.” Floyd is the head of the union representing New York City’s shelter security guards.

Floyd went on to say, “The security officers have been given no masks, no gloves, no nothing.”

In addition to the lack of protective gear, Floyd also said that 58,000 homeless individuals are ill with compromised immune systems, and the reason why he was going public is that many of his officers had submitted complaints from the 41 shelters they patrol.

For example, this past Sunday, three women who seemed ill while coughing and asking for medical attention were reported by the concerned security officers after they escorted them into the shelter’s lobby.

“They’re coughing. They’re not wearing masks. We don’t have masks,” a security source at the shelter, who requested anonymity, said.

“We’re sitting ducks.”

Catherine Trapani, Homeless Services United executive director, said, “We are working in partnership with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) to design protocols that keep homeless New Yorkers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Guidance is constantly being updated and refined as we learn more.”

“Service providers are working to identify anyone who may be experiencing symptoms and quickly and safely get them medically evaluated to ensure that no other persons are exposed,” she continued.

Floyd also made a startling claim that the shelter workers were under a gag order by the agency not to divulge safety concerns.

A USA Today article expanded on conditions like across America:

The same issues are playing out across the country in cities with large numbers of people sleeping on the streets. Officials are starting to take action.

• In the Seattle area, the county government bought an old motel to isolate coronavirus victims and let those who don’t need hospitalization recuperate.

• San Francisco plans to lease motor homes that could be parked in the city’s scenic Presidio park surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge as housing for the homeless under quarantine.

• San Jose, California, is suspending its homeless camp eradication sweeps on the belief that forcing homeless people to move could heighten exposure to the virus.

• Los Angeles is considering whether to provide more “sanitation stations” to homeless encampments.

With so many people claiming the virus is a hoax, many are not taking it seriously, and it could hurt the extremely vulnerable.
