The new friendship between President Donald Trump and Democrat governor of New York Andrew Cuomo benefits both men. One, they have a mutual enemy: Marxist New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Two, as a result of it the president looks bipartisan and thus more of a national wartime leader and Cuomo looks like the adult in a room full of Democratic Party spoiled children.

Cuomo’s people seem to have devised an ingenious win-win strategy that sets Cuomo up nicely for 2024. This analyst knows, after almost twenty years as a political consultant, some of his people. They are very sharp on the political side. And remember, there is a vast difference between the political side of the house and the policy/government side.

If this crisis goes on and does not work out for the president, no Republican or swing voter can blame Cuomo for not being a team player. If it ends relatively soon then Cuomo can claim to be part of a winning team. Given he will never run against Trump, he can afford this with his Democrat allies whose eyes are already on 2024. So while Cuomo may make nice with Trump right now, you can bet his eyes are trained like a hawk on Tom Cotton, John Thune, Nikki Haley, and Ted Cruz. Not to mention the losers of the latest Democratic primaries.

There are some touting him as Biden’s veep or indeed as the nominee if Biden falters. Neither is going to happen. Biden has already committed to a woman as veep, and this forced hiatus will only help Biden in his party, as the less you see Joe the more you like him.

So Cuomo will keep his powder dry and play it down the middle right now. Insiders say he’s no “Hamlet of the Hudson” like his NY governor dad Mario, who dithered until it was too late to run for president.

If he does decide to run he may adopt an FDR theme of economic action after supposed GOP lethargy. Watch for it out of Albany.
