The National Football League is taking the coronavirus (COVID-19) very seriously, and on Thursday, a prime example of a positive COVID-19 test from inside the NFL community underscored they should be.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton informed ESPN that he has tested positive for the virus. There was no mention as to whether Payton, 56, is suffering from any symptoms other than he didn’t feel well this past Sunday.

Payton also told ESPN the reason why he came forward with the diagnosis was to encourage people to “heed the warnings of government officials, stay inside, and behave responsibly.”

Payton said he didn’t feel well this past Sunday, took the test on Monday, and received the results Thursday afternoon. Payton is resting at home, fatigued, but said he is one of the 20 percent of the cases that has no fever and no cough. But now he will be quarantined in his home through the weekend, and he said he is upbeat and optimistic about a full recovery.

Payton said he came forward with the diagnosis because he wants all people to heed the warnings of government officials, stay inside, and behave responsibly.

“This is not just about social distancing,” Payton told ESPN. “It’s shutting down here for a week to two weeks. If people understand the curve, and understand the bump, we can easily work together as a country to reduce it. Take a minute to understand what the experts are saying. It’s not complicated to do what they’re asking of us. Just that type of small investment by every one of us will have a dramatic impact.

“I was fortunate to be in the minority, without the serious side effects that some have. I’m lucky. Younger people feel like they can handle this, but they can be a carrier to someone who can’t handle it. So we all need to do our part. It’s important for every one of us to do our part.” [ESPN]

Three to one, he was asymptomatic, also 3 to 1 he’ll get over the virus without much of an issue. How many viruses do you know can have as much as nearly 80% of those inflicted get over said virus and immune to it without ever seeing a symptom? The CDC, weeks ago, admitted that 75% will get the disease, get over it, and develop immunity without ever seeing a symptom.

The numbers are panning out to see that 75% as an underestimation. In regards to Payton, I’ve no doubt he’ll get past this without issue.

We wish Coach Payton a quick recovery, and we thank him for shining a light on the importance of doing whatever we can to limit the spread of the virus.
