Fox News reports, “Judge Lynn Adelman of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin blasted the Roberts-led court in an article titled ‘The Roberts Court’s Assault on Democracy,’ set to be published in the Harvard Law & Policy Review.”

Adelman was appointed by Bill Clinton.

The soon-to-be-read complaint opines, “[T]he Roberts Court has been anything but passive. Rather, the Court’s hard-right majority is actively participating in undermining American democracy. Indeed, the Roberts Court has contributed to ensuring that the political system in the United States pays little attention to ordinary Americans and responds only to the wishes of a relatively small number of powerful corporations and individuals.”

Adelman finished with taking a cheap shot at the GOP-led U.S. Senate.

“The zealous partisanship the Republicans displayed in connection with the Garland nomination, as well as judicial appointments generally reminds one of nothing so much as the ‘fire-eaters,’ those fervent defenders of slavery who pushed the South into the Civil War.”

Those on the Right can be gratified by these words because if the Left was not feeling nervous over upcoming Supreme Court decisions they would not react this forcefully. As the maxim goes, “When you’re over a target you get flak.”

Adelman leaves behind any pretense of judicial fairness and impartiality and, ignoring judicial decorum and tradition, mounts a nakedly partisan attack on Chief Justice Roberts and the GOP Senate. This is interesting, as Roberts was not long ago seen by the Left as a potential court ally or at least a swing vote.

But going after him like this signals they see him now as an enemy deserving of the worst possible rebuke? Why now?

Because there are matters coming before the Supreme Court soon, like abortion, that are near and dear to the Left. This diatribe by Adelman is designed as a warning to Roberts: Vote our way or this is nothing compared to what you will receive from us.

For the nation’s sake it is hopeful that Roberts can stand up to this political intimidation tactic and vote in keeping with the Constitution.
