If, as is expected, President Trump is acquitted on both impeachment charges on Wednesday afternoon then will the nation gain anything from the entire impeachment process?

It can.

In retrospect two things stand out. The inability of the Democratic Party to see past anything other than pure politics (and performing very badly at that) and the need for a House procedural reform to mandate that an impeachment vote must pass the full House by a supermajority of two thirds.

To even an unbiased observer, and I am not one, the Democrats have really augured into the side of a mountain on this one. Seeing only an opportunity to hit the president, there were no calmer heads in their leadership that thought about the toll on the American people, the paralysis of government, or their realistic chances of success.

When everything is seen through a solely political prism it distorts the image to one where intelligent caution and competent strategy are clouded by a raw and desperate need for power at any cost.

But at least the Democrats could have heeded Napoleon’s dictum that, “When you set out to take Vienna, take Vienna.” Vienna here was 67 votes in the U.S. Senate to remove the president from office. With a GOP majority of 53 there was absolutely no way in the world that was an actual possibility.

Assuming the Democratic Senate caucus held all their 47 votes, 20 Republicans would have to cross over for removal to happen. Knowing those numbers beforehand it was political malpractice of the highest order to bring the charges to a full vote in the House just to lead to a suicide mission in the Senate.

It was a PR move, not an impeachment move, you say? Then why does the president right now sport the highest approval numbers of his presidency?

The realization of the full cupidity and stupidity of Democratic actions on impeachment can and should guide our voting patterns in the future.

And to forestall any more impeachment travesties like this, and to keep faith with the intent of the Founders, House rules must be amended to bring an impeachment to the Senate only after a supermajority of two thirds of the House votes for impeachment. Thus, the measure would likely be a bipartisan effort and the charges so widely accepted that there would be reason enough for possible presidential removal from office.

Let’s fix this glitch in House procedures and avoid putting the nation through this kind of insanity ever again.
