Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon and The Washington Post, hired FTI consulting to investigate the data breach of his iPhone X. As of now, the results point to Saudi Arabia as the culprit.

This week Motherboard obtained a report detailing the investigation on Jeff Bezos’s hacked iPhone X. The investigation began in November of 2019, and if you would like to look at it, you can do so here. FTI followed a set of critical events starting in 2018 describes some occurrences that led to their conclusion of “medium to high confidence.”

I found a video that gives a bit of insight into how all the events played out, leading to the investigation. The facts are corresponding to the ones stated in the report. If you take a look at the video posted by CNET, you can see that the hacking situation seems to start with lunch between Bezos and the Saudi prince.

After contact information was exchanged, The FTI report says that Bezos’ phone had allegedly been compromised through WhatsApp. This was done by sending encrypted videos and images to his phones. Investigators found that After the files were sent, Bezos’ phone began to export a horrendous amount of data.

The percent increase was around 29,000 and continued for months without ever returning to normal levels. Afterward, on November 8th, 2018, Bezos receive a text of a woman bearing a resemblance to Lauren Sanchez. At the time, Bezos was in an affair with the former news anchor and was also going through a divorce with his wife. At the time, the public did not know of the divorce.

As of now, many in the cybersecurity community are saying that the information presented in the public report is not enough to point a finger.

“The firm, FTI Consulting, may have good reasons to conclude there was unauthorized exfiltration of data from Bezos’ phone after bin Salman sent him a WhatsApp message containing a suspicious video file. But the publicly available information about FTI’s work has left many cybersecurity experts with questions about who really hacked Bezos’ phone and how the attackers did it.” [CYBERSCOOP]

Even now, more information needs to be obtained on the matter, and I am sure that more will surface relatively soon.

On a personal level, I’m pretty shocked that one of the wealthiest in the world as susceptible to such a security breach, surely I am not alone in thinking that. With that being said, even more caution is warranted for those who use data sensitive devices daily.

I will likely follow up with a few tips to keep your device out of the way of malicious software.
