The FBI is investigating claims that Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar married her brother, according to the Daily Mail. The bureau will then share its findings with ICE.

Two agents met with a source who handed over information relating to the Democratic congresswoman’s marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, The New York Post reports. It is understood concerns over whether Omar wed British citizen Elmi to help with his immigration to the United States were discussed at the meeting in Minnesota in October.

Any findings will be shared with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the US Department of Education, the paper reports. Anyone found guilty of committing marriage fraud faces up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000. [The Daily Mail]

Omar’s office refuses to address the matter. Instead, the office claims that any questions about the allegations are examples of Islamophobia.

The website Somalispot first reported that Omar married her brother to skirt immigration laws in 2016. The site reported, “As soon as Ilhan Omar married him he started university at her alma mater North Dakota State University where he graduated in 2012. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Minneapolis where he was living in a public housing complex and was later evicted. He then returned to the United Kingdom where he now lives.”

President Trump was asked about the matter by reporters. He responded, “There’s a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it.”

Omar is a member of the progressive “squad” in congress,  along with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

The congresswoman had previously married Ahmed Hirsi in the Islamic faith, and the two had two children together before they supposedly split and she married her brother. Records suggest that Omar, Hirsi, and her brother all lived together for a time.

Omar supposedly divorced her brother in May 2017, then got back with Hirsi and had another child. Their second marriage was short-lived, however; as we reported last summer, Omar moved out of her family home and into an apartment in a trendy part of Minneapolis. The congresswoman was said to be having an affair with a married man who was working on her congressional campaign; she was spotted holding hands with her finance campaign manager Tim Mynett at a restaurant last March.
