The impeachment debate currently taking place ad nauseam in the Dem-controlled House Judiciary Committee went off the rails on Thursday as a Democrat congressman long noted for his odd answers to questions brought up the personal life of a GOP opponent who dared to mention the name of Hunter Biden and his father, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) (shown at the top of this article) challenged Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) when Gaetz spoke of allegations of drug abuse by Hunter Biden and wondered why corrupt Ukrainian energy firm Burisma would hire Biden, as Hunter Biden had no experience whatsoever in the energy field.

Gaetz also commented on Joe Biden and his public bragging of getting a Ukrainian prosecutor — someone who was investigating Burisma — fired within six hours or Biden would withhold U.S. aid. More than ironically, in that incident Joe Biden publicly admitted that the same charge was being leveled against the president in these impeachment proceedings.

But Biden has not been charged with the infraction of any law or policy.

Gaetz implied the hypocrisy of the entire matter. But after Gaetz spoke, Johnson then accused him of “character assassination.”

Johnson insisted, “The pot calling the kettle black is not something that we should do.”

That was a sly reference to a dismissed case of DUI against Gaetz from over a decade ago.

Unlike this impeachment, that case was dismissed because of lack of evidence.

So Johnson claimed Gaetz impugned the character of Hunter Biden, a man who was kicked out of the Navy for drug abuse — when Gaetz was merely bringing up a legitimate topic related to the impeachment of a president of the United States.

Then Johnson actually smeared Gaetz’s character by bringing up a dismissed charge while doing so.

The theater-of-the-absurd hypocrisy of Johnson and the Dems on this subject would be astounding if they had not engaged in it on such a constant basis.

This is from the same Rep. Hank Johnson, by the way, who warned in the past that the island of Guam could “tip over” or “capsize” because of overpopulation (his office later claimed he wasn’t serious).

In advocating the continuation of an outmoded 1925 helium subsidy to defend against a blimp attack — yes, blimp attack — Johnson commented, “Imagine a world without helium.” Helium is a naturally occurring inert gas.

The Democrats are gagging any attempt to bring candor to the impeachment process and instead are ramming it through on the flimsiest of pretexts, understanding that the more scrutiny their reasoning gets, the less it passes muster.

That may play in the Democrat-controlled Judiciary Committee. But in a full House vote, will it cut mustard with the 31 Dems who are up for re-election and who represent congressional districts won by President Donald Trump in 2016?

It would only take less than 20 Dem votes switching against impeachment for the measure to fail and spectacularly backfire on Dem House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The week ahead will tell the tale.
