—Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy faces an uncertain path in his bid to be the next Speaker of the House. The chamber will vote to elect a new Speaker today under the incoming Republican majority. It’s not clear if McCarthy will lock down the votes necessary to secure the gavel, as at least five conservative Republicans are threatening to vote no to deny McCarthy the 218 votes he needs.
Two— Part of the new one-point-seven-trillion dollar federal budget will include 350-million dollars for a new icebreaker to fight ice dams in the Great Lakes. The U.S. Coast Guard has just one “heavy” icebreaker that is used primarily in the Straits of Mackinac between Lakes Michigan and Huron. The ships not only break up ice jams that lead to flooding, but also provide necessary shipping lanes for Great Lakes freighters.
And number three— It was a scary moment for players, coaches and fans watching Monday Night Football. Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after taking a hard hit on a tackle attempt in the first quarter. Hamlin received CPR on the field before he was rushed to a local hospital where is listed in critical condition. The game was postponed by the NFL.
