No Kings, Just Votes: Anti-Trump Protesters Trade Crowns for Campaign-Style Get-Out-the-Vote Drives

If you spot a gaggle of older white women marching through your community on Saturday, don’t be surprised. It’s just another round of “No Kings” protests – only this time, the anti-Trump activism is getting a political makeover as a “get-out-the-vote” drive.

Yes, it’s another demonstration against President Donald Trump, but with the midterm elections just 18 days away, organizers are turning their anti-Trump protests into a voter turnout operation, hoping to translate their outrage into votes at the ballot box.

In an October 14 email, progressive organizations MoveOn and Voto Latino promoted more than 2,000 “No Kings: Vote Early” events, encouraging participants to check their voter registrations, make voting plans and bring friends to the polls.

The email also accused the Trump administration of attempting to intimidate voters, threatening federal agents at polling places and trying to interfere with mail-in voting. Those allegations were presented without specific supporting examples – no surprise.

So when those older white women hit the streets Saturday with their “No Kings” signs and anti-Trump chants, they won’t just be protesting the president. They’ll also be doing a little campaign work, trying to turn their political outrage into votes at the ballot box.
