Beijing Wants Your Driving Data – Congress Wants China to Hit the Road

Just when Americans thought they only had to worry about China spying through their phones, computers and TikTok, along comes another potential surveillance device: their cars.

It looks like Beijing might want to know more than what Americans are watching online. Now there are concerns about where we’re driving, too – and whatever additional data they can obtain from us.

According to a report [1] in Just the News, Congress is pushing bipartisan legislation to keep Chinese-connected vehicles, software and electronic components out of American automobiles over national security concerns.

The Connected Vehicle Security Act [2], backed by Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, would strengthen restrictions on vehicle technology tied to foreign adversaries.

The concern? Modern vehicles collect enormous amounts of information through GPS systems, cameras and connected technology. In the wrong hands, that data could become a surveillance gold mine.

Even the United Auto Workers supports the legislation, citing national security and the need to protect American manufacturing.

Imagine paying $50,000 for a new vehicle only to discover the Chinese Communist Party might be getting a complimentary ride.
