Trump Floats the State of ‘New America’ and Democrats Freak Out – Again

President Donald J. Trump has discovered a remarkably easy way to send Democrats into orbit: float a new name for something and wait for the meltdown.

Trump shared a map over the weekend labeling New Mexico as “New America.” As you would expect, it immediately set off criticism and plenty of speculation about whether the president was joking, trolling or floating another addition to his growing renaming campaign. The post follows his administration’s push to restore or change several geographic and government names.

The outrage is especially rich after we have spent years watching names get scrubbed, swapped and replaced at breakneck speed whenever Democrats decided something needed a new label.

Columbus Day became Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Mount McKinley became Denali. Squaw Valley became Palisades Tahoe. Military installations including Fort Bragg, Fort Benning and Fort Hood were renamed. Sports teams dumped Redskins and Indians. Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben’s and Eskimo Pie disappeared from grocery shelves.

I wrote [3] about this very thing just last week, when Democrats were melting down over President Trump renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” after already changing the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” As I pointed out then, the outrage was more than a little hypocritical coming from a political party that has spent years enthusiastically renaming everything from “homeless people” to “unhoused” and “illegal aliens” to “undocumented immigrants.”

Once again, as I pointed out, changing names is progressive and enlightened when Democrats do it – but when Trump joins the renaming business, suddenly tradition matters.
