Nearly 25 years after terrorists hijacked four airplanes, brought down the World Trade Center towers, struck the Pentagon and killed nearly 3,000 people, we learn the alleged mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks finally has a trial date.
Just don’t mark your calendar for anytime soon.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three alleged accomplices are scheduled to stand trial before a military tribunal at Guantánamo Bay beginning June 5, 2028 – nearly 27 years after 9/11. To be more specific: 9,765 days from 9/11.
Apparently, more than a quarter-century was needed to get to trial. According to a report [1] from Just the News, Military Judge Lt. Col. Michael Schrama rejected prosecutors’ request for a January 2027 trial, determining more time is needed to resolve the mountain of pretrial issues that have accumulated during the case. And even the 2028 date depends on attorneys meeting deadlines along the way.
Mohammed was captured in Pakistan in 2003 and transferred to Guantánamo Bay in 2006. The case has since crawled through years of disputes involving evidence, CIA interrogations, torture claims, classified information, and plea agreements.
But more than 25 years? That’s ridiculous. It’s not like it would be a difficult conviction since the jerk weed already confessed [2].
So…barring another delay, America may finally see the alleged architect of 9/11 go to trial. Speedy, it is not.
