What was once bipartisan support for America’s closest ally is becoming another casualty of the Democratic Party’s leftward march. Not long ago, standing with Israel was one of Washington’s safest bipartisan positions. Those days appear to be fading fast as Democrat politicians (many who are antisemites) cater to their leftist voters who are anti-Israel.
This week, 103 House Democrats and one RINO (Massie) voted [1] to eliminate billions in U.S. military aid to Israel, siding with an amendment that would have dismantled one of America’s longest-standing foreign alliances. The proposal failed by a wide margin, thanks largely to Republican opposition and a bloc of Democrats who broke with their party’s progressive wing.
The vote wasn’t close – but it was revealing.
It also revealed the cowards who wouldn’t even take a stand and voted “present.”
For Republicans, it offered fresh evidence that the Democratic Party is increasingly driven by activists who see Israel less as a democratic ally and more as a political villain – and a political liability. Supporters of the amendment insist they oppose Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, not Israel itself. Critics aren’t buying the distinction.
The amendment may have failed, but the message didn’t. More than 100 House Democrats were willing to put their opposition to Israel on the congressional record, marking another sign of just how dramatically the party’s position has shifted over the past decade. And not for the better.
