Michigan Governor Candidate Brings a Jingle to the Governor’s Race While Democrat Frontrunner’s Playlist Practically Writes Itself

While most Michigan gubernatorial candidates are still polishing talking points and testing slogans in focus groups, Republican gubernatorial candidate Perry Johnson decided to do what any businessman-turned-candidate with a flair for spectacle might do: roll out a song.

Johnson’s pitch is simple, catchy, and aimed straight at Michigan taxpayers’ wallets: eliminate the state income tax and put $4,747 a year back in the pocket of the average family of four.

His song “$4747!” is quite twangy – and the lyrics include:

In the heart of Michigan, a voice rings true,
Perry Johnson’s coming, he’s got work to do.
Quality and efficiency, that’s his game,
Cutting through the waste, callin’ out the names.

Perry Johnson’s rising, gonna take a stand,
For families and freedom across this land,
No more income tax, saving us that dough,
$4,747, give us room to grow.

In a crowded GOP field, Johnson’s little musical moment does what a lot of politicians can’t: it makes people stop scrolling. Love it or laugh at it, the guy understands that bland candidates vanish into the wallpaper. A song about keeping your money beats another recycled speech about “moving Michigan forward” any day.

Meanwhile, if Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson – the frontrunner for her party’s gubernatorial nomination – wants a campaign trail theme song of her own, I have a few fitting options for her long-running and very public war on election integrity during her time in office:

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Smooth Criminal
Take the Ballots and Run

While Perry Johnson is out crooning about tax cuts and putting money back in voters’ pockets, Benson can rally her progressive base with words and musical notes while opposing everything that President Trump supports – including efforts aimed at making elections more secure.
