Catch-and-Release Justice: Criminals Get Deals While the Rest of Us Get a Front-Row Seat to the Crime Wave

America’s criminal justice system, especially lately, has been running a generous customer-loyalty program – commit a crime, get a reduced sentence or charges dismissed, and earn bonus points for your next arrest.

Case in point: 30-year-old Daniel Vasquez reportedly walked up to a stranger working on a computer in a library in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, March 11 and punched him so hard the victim was knocked unconscious before collapsing to the floor – followed by multiple stomps and kicks to the head.

The 62-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis happened to be inside the building and personally detained the suspect.

The attack comes after a long criminal history for Vasquez, where reported records show 10 cases, including three felonies and four assault charges – all dismissed. Previous incidents include threatening an 11-year-old boy on a city bus and kicking him, punching the child’s mother and a bystander who intervened, assaulting a bus driver, and allegedly harassing an officer by spitting in his face and using a racial slur. Just the kind of person we want on the streets, right?!

Despite the repeated accusations of violence, the cases were dismissed or diverted, leaving critics to point out that a pattern of leniency allowed the suspect to remain on the streets until someone was nearly beaten to death.

The disturbing attack is just another entry in a long list of violent incidents where offenders cycle through the system like frequent-flyer members of the county jail. Arrest. Release. Reduced charges. Repeat.

It’s been bad for a while, but things deteriorated rapidly after the George Floyd incident, when many Democrats pushed policies to coddle criminals and target law enforcement. In the name of “equity,” prosecutors and lawmakers in many jurisdictions have embraced reforms that have reduced charges, shortened sentences, and prioritized diversion programs – usually allowing repeat offenders to cycle quickly back onto the streets instead of spending significant time behind bars.

Meanwhile, the people who actually follow the law get the privilege of funding the system through their taxes while wondering whether the next random assault will be theirs.

Illegal aliens who commit crimes frequently receive special treatment too because Democrats see them as part of a future voting base. That’s why the anti-ICE push has become such a rallying cry for the Left: Democrats don’t want their voters arrested and deported.

And so it goes…Repeat offenders get plea deals. Judges lower bonds. Prosecutors downgrade charges. And jails keep opening their doors like revolving hotel lobbies. The result? Law-abiding Americans are increasingly left feeling like sitting ducks in their own communities.
