California has officially launched [1] a new war on ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest idea isn’t subtle either. It’s a brand-new state-run portal inviting residents to report alleged “misconduct” by federal agents – yes, that includes, of course, immigration officers.
Think of it as a digital neighborhood watch, except instead of tattling on porch pirates, Californians are now encouraged to upload photos, videos, and hot takes about the feds. The California Department of Justice rolled it out, hoping to deputize every iPhone-wielding bystander in order to keep tabs on Washington’s immigration enforcers.
Newsom’s statement about the new snitch website is: “We’re not going to stand by while anyone – including federal agents – abuses their authority in California. This new portal gives Californians an easy and safe way to speak up, share what they see, and help us hold people accountable. No one is above the law.”
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said what this is all about: Trump. His statement was: “The Trump Administration is engaging in a campaign of terror and fear that has left some California communities scared to go about their daily lives. From unmarked military-style vehicles to detainments that more closely resemble kidnappings, Californians are rightly concerned that federal agents may be crossing the line and abusing their authority. The President’s actions these past 10 months only lend support to this conclusion.”
Now, Californians can log on, upload videos, photos or whatever receipts they’ve collected to turn in law enforcement folks who are trying to keep them safe. Got a blurry photo of an unmarked van? Got shaky cellphone footage of a late-night unannounced raid? Go wild. Upload it. Got an ex you want to turn in? Upload their information.
Congratulations, California – you’ve handed the keys of vigilante justice to every disgruntled neighbor with a phone and Wi-Fi.
