As the government shutdown grinds on, President Trump is urging Republicans to quit playing nice and drop the hammer. On Truth Social, he declared, “Get rid of the filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” – calling it the GOP’s ultimate “Trump Card” to end the stalemate once and for all.
Trump praised Majority Leader John Thune and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson for doing a great job during the shutdown in dealing with the “crazed lunatics” (Democrats) who have lost all sense of wisdom and reality, wanting trillions of dollars to subsidize Obamacare.
But while Trump heaps praise on his leadership team, the GOP seems content to just tread water. The spineless Republicans never think beyond the next news cycle. They don’t play to win – never have. Even with majorities in Congress and Trump in the White House, they still manage to fumble their advantage like pros.
Donald Trump’s plea to scrap the legislative filibuster? Dead on arrival according to Thune’s spokesperson who says Thune’s position on the importance of the legislative filibuster is “unchanged.”
So while Republicans whine about “protecting guardrails” and “defending tradition,” America falters. As the shutdown limps on, the 60-vote filibuster wall stands unmoved, and Republicans keep clutching their “principles” while the clock ticks. They won’t change the filibuster because winning might mean actually doing something and taking accountability for it. And who needs that headache?
