While most Michiganders are still busy crying into their Honolulu blue jerseys over the Detroit Lions’ heartbreaking NFC Championship loss, my attention has always been focused on other teams – teams that have my favorite former Alabama quarterbacks playing for them. My Super Bowl allegiance isn’t tied to geography; it’s tied to greatness. And that means rolling with the Philadelphia Eagles and former Alabama QB Jalen Hurts.
Sure, I also keep an eye on Tua Tagovailoa’s Dolphins, Mac Jones’ Jaguars, and even the Steelers because of Najee Harris. But Hurts is my favorite. And when you add DeVonta Smith (also an Alabama alum) to the mix? That’s Alabama/Eagles magic.
However, Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just about football; it’s about food. While I watch Hurts dismantle the Kansas City Chiefs, I’ll be fueling up with pizza, wings, chips, and queso – because what’s a football game without an unnecessary amount of cheese?
According to Newsweek, Michigan’s go-to Super Bowl snack is buffalo chicken dip, which is fine, but let’s be honest – it’s just spicy mush on a chip. Other states have some other favorites including deviled eggs, hot dogs and funeral potatoes (yum!)
Expert predictions? ESPN’s panel of 67 experts leaned 61.2% toward the Chiefs winning. Translation: A lot of people are about to be very wrong.
While I’ll be staying up for the football and the feast, I usually enjoy the commercials too (although last year’s batch was a total flop). This year, the Clydesdales are making a comeback, and apparently, Hellman’s is giving us a “When Harry Met Sally” deli scene reboot… but with mayo.
Super Bowl 59 kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 9, in New Orleans. Let’s go, Eagles. And Roll Tide!
