In a move that only the 45th and 47th President of the United States could conjure up, President Donald Trump has unveiled his latest brainchild: the U.S. taking ownership of the Gaza Strip. Yes, you read that correctly. The man who brought us golden skyscrapers and reality TV now envisions transforming a conflict-ridden enclave into the “Riviera” of the Middle East.
People often assume Trump is just spitballing when he comes up with ideas like this – tossing out wild, off-the-cuff ideas, like when he brought up buying Greenland or reimagining the Panama Canal. But time and again, it turns out there’s a method to the madness. His ideas are often the product of years of careful thought, or simply creative solutions no one else considered because the old ways weren’t working.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, standing beside our president, Netanyahu praised Trump and his “outside-the-box” thinking and unwavering commitment to the Jewish state.
Also during the joint press conference, Trump declared that the United States would take over the Gaza Strip and do a great job with it. Netanyahu praised Trump on this idea too – as have many others including David Friedman, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel. He said about the plan, “Trump’s proposed USA takeover of the Gaza Strip may sound out of the box, but it is brilliant, historic and the only idea I have heard in 50 years that has a chance of bringing security, peace and prosperity to this troubled region.”
Trump elaborated on plans to relocate the 1.8 million Palestinians currently residing there to neighboring countries, suggesting that Egypt and Jordan might open their hearts to accept them (usually that means there will be a financial deal involved.)
Once the pesky issue of inhabitants is resolved, Trump’s vision is to level the existing structures and rebuild Gaza into a luxurious destination. Think Las Vegas meets Dubai. Trump, ever the visionary, sees this as a place where “the world’s people” can live, presumably in peace, harmony, and five-star accommodations.
Trump said, “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings – level it out and create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”
However, the reality of the situation is that evil still exists in the world, and those who seek to harm others – especially the Jewish people – seldom waver in their attacks. Whether Trump’s latest proposal will gain global traction is uncertain. The Bible contains numerous prophecies about the end times, many focused on the Middle East, particularly Israel. Whether Trump or anyone else can alter that course remains to be seen.
