Every November 11th, the nation pauses to honor the courage, sacrifice, and commitment of its veterans – individuals who put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms.
Veterans Day is more than a holiday; it’s a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by men and women in uniform. It’s a time to express our gratitude to the millions who served and continue to serve, ensuring the safety and security of the United States.
The origins of Veterans Day.
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. When President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, it was a way to celebrate peace and honor those who had fought in “the war to end all wars.” In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day, expanding its scope to honor veterans from all wars.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in military service, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans, both living and deceased, who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a day to acknowledge the sacrifices they’ve made in both war and peace times, preserving the freedoms we hold dear.
A Michigan hero’s story of service and sacrifice.
One hero who has made a great sacrifice for the country is Major Jonathan Turnbull, originally from Gaylord, Michigan, and who served in the U.S. Army. He was critically injured during a suicide bombing in Syria in 2019. The attack resulted in the loss of his right eye and significant damage to his left, leading to complete blindness according to UpNorthLive.
Despite these life-altering injuries, Major Turnbull demonstrated remarkable resilience. He underwent extensive rehabilitation, relearning basic skills and adapting to his new circumstances. His unwavering determination and positive outlook have been an inspiration to many. About his service, Turnbull said, “It’s actually a sacrifice that I would make. Over and over and over again.”
In recognition of his courage and perseverance, Major Turnbull was honored on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where he received support to renovate his home to accommodate his needs.
Honoring our veterans today and every day.
Veterans Day reminds us of the debt of gratitude we owe to those who have served. Attending parades, visiting memorials, and sharing the stories of local veterans like Jonathan Turnbull are just some ways to honor the legacy of service. By recognizing and supporting veterans in our communities, we not only keep their sacrifices in our memories but also reinforce the values that bind us as a nation.
This Veterans Day, let’s remember that honoring veterans is more than just a once-a-year event – it’s a daily commitment to respect, support, and acknowledge the men and women who have given so much for our country.
