Tragedy To Farce

There have been many ways the story of Donald Trump has been one of success to tragedy.

This is the tale of a man who wins the presidency out of nowhere and does, until a disease strikes, a very good job. Then he takes bad advice from an evil counselor, Fauci as Iago, and subsequently loses his high office and degenerates into bitterness and recrimination culminating in loss of greatness. In history and drama it’s happened before.

But now we’ve entered another phase of the narrative, a Marxist phase. How? It was Marx who said history repeats itself first as tragedy then as farce. It may have been the only correct thing he ever wrote. And unless Trump is trying to intentionally trash his own brand, this has become high farce.

Fox: “Former President Donald Trump was mocked across social media Thursday after hyping up a ‘major announcement’ that turned out to be digital trading cars with his face superimposed onto them. Trump first teased the announcement Wednesday on his Truth Social account, cryptically hinting that ‘America needs a superhero!’ Come Thursday, Trump unveiled official Donald Trump Digital Trading Cards, posting an image of a chiseled likeness of himself wearing an American flag-style Superman outfit. ‘These limited edition cards feature amazing ART of my Life & Career! Collect all of your favorite Trump Digital Trading Cards, very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting,” Trump wrote. ‘Only $99 each! Would make a great Christmas gift. Don’t wait. They will be gone, I believe, very quickly!’ ”

Mother. Of. God.

Even Jimmy Carter never debased himself and the office of the presidency with such pathetic antics. Prominent PA Republican attorney Joan London commented, “He’s jumped the shark. Next he’ll be pushing a brand of reverse mortgages.” Bingo. Others were of similar mindset.

“Thank God, the digital trading cards are here. It was indeed a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT,” said Ben Shapiro.

A distaff NYT scribe joined in, “The speculation from other [Republicans] and even some Dems was rampant that the ‘major announcement’ would be about his campaign or [Kevin] McCarthy. But, instead it’s a quick money-making opportunity trussed up with a meme,” she wrote. A well placed source in academia opined, “And we worry about Biden and dementia????”

Politicians are shameless hustlers who will sell any bizarre trinket to their base. Trump isn’t alone in that regard. But combine it with his witless actions since November 2020 and the over the top odd nature of this particular item for sale and you get a guy who has either lost it or is still listening to the wrong people.

What next? Trump themed hand puppets? MAGA suppositories? Whatever the next farcical chapter of this story it’s looking less and less like a run for the presidency and more like a 3am television commercial for a North Korean-made kitchen gadget.
