On May 24 around 8 pm on John Deere Road, the trooper had just finished conducting a traffic stop when a green Jeep crossed over the white fog line and hit the driver’s side of the police vehicle. At the time of the crash the trooper’s emergency lights were activated.

After hitting the police vehicle the Jeep rolled over several times. The trooper was transported to a nearby hospital and received treatment for non life threatening injuries. Matthew Scherer, the driver of the Jeep, was also transported to the hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

Scherer was charged with driving under the influence, Scott’s law, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, failure to wear a seat belt, and driver’s license not on person.

“ISP Troopers throughout the state risk their lives daily to keep our roadways safe. These crashes are completely preventable, and I am asking the public to avoid putting the lives of others at risk by making responsible choices when behind the wheel.  Always drive sober and move over when you approach a stationary vehicle on the side of the road.” –  Commander Captain Jason Dickey
