8 Fully Vaccinated New York Yankees Test Positive For COVID-19

New York, NY – On Thursday, the New York Yankees stated that shortstop Gleyber Torres, who is fully vaccinated, tested positive for the virus and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Torres is the 8th fully vaccinated New York Yankee team member who has tested positive for COVID 19. The team also stated that Torres had previously tested positive during the off season. Coaches Reggie Willits, Matt Blake and Phil Nevin, all fully vaccinated, have also tested positive in what they’re calling ‘breakthrough positives’ in the official MLB statement. (Full statement below)

The Yankees had reached an 85% vaccination rate among players, coaches and support staff already but yesterday, Major League Baseball released the following on their website…

Statement – Update on Yankees COVID-19 positive tests:
“The Yankees can today confirm that INF Gleyber Torres has received a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. He was fully vaccinated and previously had COVID-19 during the most recent baseball offseason. Torres has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list, and the Yankees have recalled INF/OF Miguel Andújar (#41) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Torres is the eighth Yankees player, coach or traveling staff member to test positive this week. All of the positives are breakthrough positives, occurring with individuals who were fully vaccinated. The other recent Yankees COVID-19 positives are Pitching Coach Matt Blake, Third Base Coach Phil Nevin, First Base Coach Reggie Willits and four members of the Yankees’ traveling staff. All are currently under quarantine protocol in Tampa. Major League Baseball, its medical experts and the New York State Department of Health are currently advising and assisting the Yankees, who continue to undergo additional testing and contact tracing.”

“We’re also learning as we go and getting informed as to what we need to do exactly and just try to do as best we can to be able to make quick adjustments on the fly. Just doing the best we can with it all.” – Yankee’s Manager Aaron Boone

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the positive cases among the Yankees could be a possible instance of new variants but the cases don’t negate how effective the vaccine is in large populations “My understanding is that six of the seven infections were asymptomatic infections and we look to more data from that report to understand what happened there. All real-world data in large studies in settings demonstrate that vaccines are effective against disease”

We’ve got questions…

  1. Possible instance, so you don’t know what you’re talking about?
  2. Most infections have always been asymptomatic, right? So how are fully vaccinated people better off getting COVID and being asymptomatic?
  3. Why get a COVID vaccination if you can still get COVID after being vaccinated?
  4. How does ‘ALL’ real world data say something different than this real world data?
  5. If 7 out of 8 Yankees are asymptomatic, how dangerous is COVID, really?
