Trump Is Ruining His Brand

The president should still be the key figure in the Republican Party for the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential election. He may even be the next nominee. But if he continues sounding like a paranoid dictator trapped in a bunker, rather than the president of the United States, he could dissipate his support with all but the bitter enders. And they’re not enough to get him a win in the primaries, much less the general election of 2024.

Saturday’s latest outbursts were pure raving babble. “If a Democrat Presidential Candidate had an Election Rigged & Stolen, with proof of such acts at a level never seen before, the Democrat Senators would consider it an act of war, and fight to the death,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Mitch & the Republicans do NOTHING, just want to let it pass. NO FIGHT!”

“The ‘Justice’ Department and the FBI have done nothing about the 2020 Presidential Election Voter Fraud, the biggest SCAM in our nation’s history, despite overwhelming evidence,” Trump asserted. “They should be ashamed. History will remember. Never give up. See everyone in D.C. on January 6th.”

FNC: “In subsequent tweets Saturday, Trump railed about a lack of results from Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe, and derided the U.S. Supreme Court as being “totally incompetent and weak” regarding his allegations of election fraud. (Legal efforts by the Trump 2020 Campaign and Republicans in some state-level legal disputes have largely failed to produce victories on voter-fraud claims.)”

Anyone seen “Downfall” (where the famous do it yourself videos come from)? In that scenario it was Goering, the generals, and the unworthy German people. Here it’s, per above, Mitch McConnell, the Republicans, the DOJ, Bill Barr, John Durham, and the Supreme Court. Very different singers but the same song: It’s everybody’s fault but their own. Btw, the Supreme Court that is “totally incompetent and weak”? It has a solid conservative majority. Hint.

The president’s problem here, and that of the bitter enders, is that they see everything through the prism of personality. The president wildly lashes out at many who have been his allies because he is so self-involved his grasp of reality is suffering, not to mention any concept of what is good for the nation at this juncture. Georgia is burning hot with a race that will decide the Senate, but the president wants a big march in…DC.

The bitter enders follow suit. They have mislaid the ideals that brought them to Trump and instead have plighted their political troth to the president himself in a bizarre cult of personality downward spiral. In a republic it should be the ideals and policies of a leader, not their person or persona, that elicits trust and loyalty. If the president continues acting like a petulant toddler, he will deserve neither.
