A royal expert spoke out this week to say that Meghan Markle may “pedal back” her “woke” speeches after realizing that they hurt her husband Prince Harry’s relationship with the British royal family.

Over the past few weeks, Meghan has been giving speeches on such hot-button topics as Black Lives Matter and voter suppression. Royal biographer Robert Lacey, author of the new book “Battle of Brothers,” said that Meghan has since realized that speaking out about “more extreme” suspects hurts her husband’s position in the royal family. He also said that Prince William has been proven right in his fears that Meghan would cause problems for the royal family.

“Meghan is a self-made woman; she becomes a star; she becomes a self-made millionairess,” Lacey explained, according to Daily Mail. “I think when William sat down with Harry and said there could be problems, I think events have proved him right. Meghan acknowledged that it’s risky for her family to get involved in controversial issues.”

“Maybe she’s simply talking about the physical risk that exists in America for anybody, because of the way politics has become so volatile and violent there… but I think that she has come to realize how [some of her] speeches risk her husband’s relationship with the family and perhaps she may pedal back on some of these more extreme positions,” Lacey added.

This comes weeks after Harry and Meghan received tons of backlash for speaking out about the upcoming United States’ presidential election in a video for Time 100. In the video, Harry called on people to “reject hate speech” while Meghan described the presidential race as “the most important election of our lifetime.” This was controversial because the royal family is supposed to stay out of politics entirely and remain politically neutral at all times.

Lacey said that he sees Harry and Meghan as “too preachy,” adding that he believes William has actually done more for progressive causes than they have.

“People have said the Windsors don’t do ‘woke,'” Lacey explained. “They don’t know how to handle progressive causes.”

“However, I think William does it rather well,” he added. “He does it better than Meghan and Harry. This couple, in a way, are too extreme.”
