Earlier this week, we reported that Ghislaine Maxwell, the former madam of the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, was whining about conditions in prison as she begged to be let out of isolation. Now, prosecutors are firing back to reject Maxwell’s lawyers’ claims that she is being treated worse than other inmates, saying that she is in isolation for her own safety.

Daily Mail reported that Maxwell’s attorneys objected to the fact that the 58 year-old British socialite is subjected to round-the-clock surveillance and numerous body scans, arguing that she should be in the general population rather than in her cell 21 hours a day.

Prosecutors responded by saying that Maxwell is in isolation for reasons of “safety, security, and the orderly functioning of the facility,” adding that it is appropriate to closely monitor new inmates facing a “strong likelihood” of many years in prison. However, prosecutors also said that jail officials agreed to give Maxwell 13 hours a day to review materials for her trial, which is scheduled for July of 2021, rather than the normal three hours.

Prosecutors also said that they acted “expeditiously” in turning over materials, providing over 165,000 pages of evidence to Maxwell’s defense team, going on to say that the pages consist of warrants applications and subpoena returns. They said that Maxwell will be able to request victims’ names and make other motions in December after discovery is finished.

This comes after Maxwell’s lawyers sent a letter to the judge in her case in which she whined about the “onerous” conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

“It has become apparent that the BOP’s treatment of Ms. Maxwell is a reaction to the circumstances surrounding the pretrial detention and death of Mr. Epstein,” the lawyers argued in the court filing. “As a result of what occurred with Mr. Epstein, Ms. Maxwell is being treated worse than other similarly situated pretrial detainees.”

Epstein was found dead by hanging in his prison cell on August 10, 2019 as he awaited trial on numerous sex trafficking charges. Afterwards, two corrections officers were accused of failing to check on him the night of his alleged suicide, and of falsifying records.

Unlike Epstein, however, Maxwell’s lawyers argued that the 58 year-old British socialite “has never been suicidal and was never diagnosed as exhibiting risk factors for suicide.”

Maxwell was arrested last month on charges related to her grooming young girls for sex with Epstein. She was remanded to prison after a judge deemed her to be a significant flight risk given her immense wealth and international connections. If convicted on all charges, she is facing 35 years in prison.
