Rumors have been circulating over the past few weeks that Ellen DeGeneres wants to leave her daytime talk show after she was accused of turning a blind eye to racism, intimidation, and sexual misconduct on set. Now, DeGeneres’ wife Portia de Rossi has broken her silence to address these rumors, and to reveal how the host is coping during this difficult time.
Page Six [1] reported that de Rossi, 47, was approached by a photographer on Sunday while walking her dogs with her mother in Santa Barbara. When asked about DeGeneres, de Rossi told the photographer that her wife is “doing great.”
The “Arrested Development” actress was then asked if DeGeneres would continue to do her talk show, to which de Rossi responded simply by saying, “yes she is.”
DeGeneres came under fire for the apology she finally issued at the end of July, as she was slammed for placing the blame for what happened on set squarely on her staffers.
“As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done,” DeGeneres said. “Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”
As the backlash only got worse from there, a source with Telepictures came forward to claim that DeGeneres had had enough and was ready to quit.
“She feels she can’t go on and the only way to recover her personal brand from this is to shut down the show,” the source told Daily Mail [2]. “The truth is she knew what was going on, it’s her show. The buck stops with her. She can blame every executive under the sun – but Ellen is ultimately the one to blame.”
“Inside Telepictures we’ve had enough of her. She is a phony who does not practice what she preaches,” the source added. “The behavior of her show executives has been appalling, but [Ellen] is no better. In fact, she is the worst. It’s outrageous that she is trying to pretend that this is all a shock to her. The fish rots from the head, and Ellen is the head.”
It remains to be seen whether DeGeneres’ brand, which revolves around telling people to “be kind” to one another at the end of every show, can ever recover from this.
