Meghan Markle Has Gotten ‘Punchier’ Now That She’s Free From ‘Constraints’ Of Royal Life, Expert Says

A royal biographer is speaking out this week to say that Meghan Markle is giving “punchier” speeches these days, now that she is free from the “constraints” of being a royal.

Royal expert Omid Scobie, who wrote the book “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan,” explained to the Heirpod [1]podcast that Meghan is now free to speak “from the heart” on topics like race and gender equality now that she is no longer tied to the royal family. This came after Meghan gave a stirring speech at the Girl Up Leadership Summit last week using bullet-points, rather than the kind of structured speech that royals are usually bound to.

“This was Meghan really being able to talk without the constraints of some of the things you might have to bear in mind when writing a speech as a working member of the royal family,” Scobie said, according to Daily Mail [2]. “I understand she spent a long time preparing for this speech. Usually we see members of the royal family reading from very tight scripts when they go up onto a stage, I understand Meghan had bullet points.”

He went on to say that during the speech, Meghan was “perhaps a little punchier than we’ve seen in the past,” adding that “she spoke more from the heart than from a script.’

“I had an interesting conversation with Team Sussex after this happened,” Scobie continued. “They said this speech really spoke to many of the issues she will continue to focus on passionately moving forward, gender equity, racial injustice, youth empowerment…This worked a really great preview for the Duchess of Sussex and some of her future speaking engagements.”

During her speech at the summit, Meghan took what appeared to be a shot at Queen Elizabeth when she hit out at the behavior of “those in the corridors of power.”

“I want to share something with you,” Meghan said. “It’s that those in the halls and corridors and places of power, from lawmakers and world leaders to executives, all of those people, they depend on you more than you will ever depend on them. And here’s the thing: they know this.”

“They know that all of you, at a younger age than any modern comparison, are setting the tone for an equitable humanity. Not figuratively, literally,” she continued. “This is a humanity that desperately needs you. To push it, to push us, forcefully in a more inclusive, more just, and more empathetic direction.”

“To not only frame the debate, but be in charge of the debate—on racial justice, gender, climate change, mental health and wellbeing, on civic engagement, on public service, on so much more,” Meghan added. “That’s the work you’re already out there doing.”
