Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged former madam of Jeffrey Epstein, is fighting back one week after her arrest. On Thursday night, her lawyer claimed in a court filing that the charges against the 58 year-old British socialite were “meritless.”

“The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York on June 29, 2020, caused a meritless indictment to be issued against Ms. Maxwell,” attorney Laura Menninger wrote in the filing, according to Fox News.

Menninger, a lawyer from Colorado, wrote this filing in response to a civil lawsuit brought against Maxwell and Epstein’s estate in January by “Jane Doe,” who claims she was only 13 years-old when she was approached by the pair in 1994 at a summer music camp in Michigan.

“Jane Doe was their first known victim and was subsequently abused by Epstein and Maxwell for years as a young girl, suffering unimaginable physical and psychological trauma and distress,” the complaint states. “Maxwell also regularly facilitated Epstein’s abuse of Doe and was frequently present when it occurred.”

Maxwell has been hit with six charges in relation to her allegedly grooming three unnamed minor girls for sex with Epstein between 1994 and 1997. Prosecutors are claiming that Maxwell recruited the girls, becoming close to them before she had them engage in sex acts with Epstein. She also sometimes actively participated in the sexual abuse herself.

Menninger said in the filing that her client answered Jane Doe “to the extent that she can without waiving the right against self-incrimination under the United States and New York constitutions and otherwise will invoke that right.”

She went on to add that Maxwell’s “denials of factual allegations (in Doe’s lawsuit) shall be interpreted the same as pleading not guilty to the various counts in any criminal indictment.”

Menninger denied nearly every claim made by Doe, claiming that whatever physical and psychological damages the victim suffered were not inflicted upon her by Maxwell.

“(Doe’s) damages, if any, were the result of her own conduct,” Menninger wrote, adding that Doe had “voluntarily or negligently assumed a known risk” and had “consented to the alleged conduct.”

Robert Glassman, the attorney representing Doe, said that he is “disappointed” that Maxwell’s team was “once again deflecting blame on the victims themselves.”

Epstein took his life in a New York prison last August while awaiting trial for his sex crimes. To make sure Maxwell doesn’t do the same thing, the Justice Department is taking a number of precautions to make sure that someone is with her at all times, even giving her a roommate in her cell.
