After tangling with Trump, Klobuchar drops like a stone on Biden veep list

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) was riding high not too long ago. Thought a popular senator from a swing state, she would perhaps have burnished Joe Biden’s moderate credentials, creds he needs to win the presidency. Choosing her as the veep nominee would have let him keep his promise to name a woman to the ticket. But that was last month and this is now.

Today she is radioactive. She made one big mistake and the coincidences of modern politics (not to mention cancel culture, something she has embraced as an social justice PC warrior) and her past have combined to make her chances at the Democrat vice-president nominee slot currently slim to none.

First, she criticized President Donald Trump on his use and advocacy of the virus treatment drug hydroxychloroquine. Then it emerged that her own husband was using the same drug for treatment and virus deterrence. Not only did she not do her homework before speaking, but she embarrassed her party in her first direct run-in with the president.

Then came this week and the Minneapolis riots over the death of George Floyd while in police custody. Black activists in the Democratic Party already did not want Klobuchar on the ticket because she is white. Now, as her statement on the Floyd death was mealy-mouthed at best, the fact that when she was a Minneapolis district attorney involved in racial controversy and thus has an indirect tie to the city riots, and Biden’s sensitivity on race issues with blacks after his recent clumsy and idiotic radio interview, all these factors conspire to knock Klobuchar out of the running for the veep nominee nod.

Other Democrats smell blood in the water and are rushing to attack her. On Wednesday, liberal Democrat Sunny Hostin, a co-host of the ultra-left “The View,” said that Klobuchar is a “non-starter,” as she talked about Floyd’s death which Hostin called a “murder.”

“We’re seeing that black people in Minneapolis are arrested at nine times the rate of a white person for nonviolent offenses [a ridiculous comparison since she does not clarify if blacks are committing nine times the crimes],” said Hostin. “That says something to me, and I think, you know, when we talk about politics, and we talk about Joe Biden’s selection for a vice presidential pick, that is why the black community has said that Amy Klobuchar is a nonstarter for them, because in many respects from 1999 to 2007, she declined to prosecute over two dozen cases involving police killings of unarmed people.” Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark.

In particular focus by black activists who oppose Klobuchar is the case of Myon Burrell. The black teenager was accused of the 2002 shooting death of an 11-year-old girl. Klobuchar touted the case to highlight her alleged toughness on crime. However, black critics said Burrell was railroaded by the police. The issue hit Klobuchar on the campaign trail, as protesters forced her to cancel a rally in suburban Minneapolis just before Super Tuesday. When she dropped out of the race for president following a massacre in the South Carolina primary, she had won less than 1% of the black vote. This proves out the popular theory that African Americans do not watch “Fargo” in a continuous loop.

Aimee Allison, founder of She the People (a left-wing group that promotes minority women for office), last week told Politico that Klobuchar would “risk losing the very base the Democrats need to win” if she was picked as the party’s vice presidential nominee.

On Tuesday, Allison tweeted, “When I said that Senator Klobuchar should in no way be a VP pick, I’m talking about a person that could write a statement about the police murder of George Floyd without saying POLICE MURDER or GEORGE FLOYD.”

These are the issues facing Amy Klobuchar in her quest to be on the national Democrat ticket. Joe Biden and his team cannot have been too impressed by her performance against Trump, her record as Minneapolis DA, and the open hostility of black activists to her potential place as the veep nominee. If she was smart, Klobuchar would spare herself an awkward fate and take her name out of contention.
