Earlier this month, WWII veteran Captain Tom Moore became one of Britain’s most beloved residents when he raised millions for the nation’s health care workers.
Moore vowed to walk 100 laps of his garden, with his walker, hoping his walking mission would raise £1,000 (about $1,200) in pledges to thank Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) for his new hip.

According to BBC News, he far exceeded his monetary goal as donations topped £29 million (about 36,131,100.00) — and has gained more attention than he likely expected.
His fans and countrymen showered the 99-year-old veteran with over 125,000 birthday cards, according to BBC News [2].
Today I completed my final 10 laps, and although the mission is complete – I am going to keep on going.
The donations stand at 15.5 MILLION pounds – wow.
Thank you all – now let's continue to support our NHS!

Armed with a walker and determined to complete 100 laps, Moore began his challenge to raise money for NHS Charities Together, which collects funds for UK hospitals as well as health care staff and volunteers. The father and daughter also started a JustGiving page on April 8 in honor of his challenge, and aimed to raise £1,000 by the end of the month.
After local media began covering Moore’s mission, donations flooded in, prompting them to keep increasing their target amount. Now, less than two weeks later, they have raised millions of pounds.
On April 16, Moore completed his challenge well before his birthday, surrounded by a guard of honor from the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and cheered on by a crowd of health care workers.
He also received a message from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and was honored by the Keighley Town Council with the Freedom of Keighley accolade.
