[VIDEO] FL Commissioner Confronts Mayor Who Continues Turning Off Utilities And Forcing Payments During Pandemic!!

I understand how tensions are up, and city and local governments are in a position they’ve never been before, but watching this tense exchange over a Mayor continuing to shut off lights during a global pandemic is unreal.

Thursday night, during a Lake Worth Beach city commission meeting in Florida, the entire situation turned into a screaming, name-calling, finger-pointing affair between Commissioner Omari Hardy, Mayor Pam Triolo, and City Manager Michael Bornstein on the other.

In the video below, Hardy slammed fellow council members who refused to stop cutting off electricity to customers who are late on their bills. Mayor Triolo tried to end the discussion and the meeting, but Hardy wasn’t done.

Hardy: “Are you telling me that you’re going to keep me from talking? This gentleman here has turned off people’s lights in the middle of a global pandemic.”

“We could have banned large public gatherings, we could have closed the beach, we could have put a moratorium on utility cutoffs. We should have been talking about this last week. We cut off people’s utilities this week and made them pay what could have been their last paycheck to us to turn their lights on.”

The Mayor didn’t have an answer for Hardy on camera. She waited and responded on the city’s Facebook page. Triolo said Hardy was bullying the city commission and that the exchange between them “created a lot of undue stress and emotion.”

As I understand it, Hardy is also the lone representative challenging Bornstein’s attempts to use Covid-19 as an excuse for the commission’s ceding its authority to him. Hardy has pointed out that it seems more than a little premature given the commission’s reluctance to enact even the most basic measures of public protection.

He is right. You can’t cut power to folks who are trying to isolate themselves for the benefit of humanity – that is just plain wrong. What was he supposed to do? Sit silently? Let people suffer? Or break “decorum” and stand up for people. I think the latter is the only option for an honorable person.

I applaud Omari Hardy. “Decorum” is often just another way to silence people. He was standing up for what is the right thing.
